Day 352 of 365 – The 25th Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Special Olympics

Well how awesome is this!  I think this run should be in everyone town and city in Ontario.  I want to thank the Law Enforcement of Shelburne and Paul Neumann for organizing the Torch Run for the Special Olympics.  It’s been missing from Shelburne since 19XX.  Paul Neumann is not exactly sure when the last one was but it would be around a 10- to 15-year hiatus since the flame last graced Shelburne’s streets.   It’s nice to see the event’s 25th anniversary celebrated in Shelburne.

The torch will start its more than three-kilometre relay through town at Hyland Heights Elementary School on Wednesday, May 16 starting at 1:30pm ending at No frills at hwy 124 and Hwy 89.

The first torch run, held in 1987, raised about $100,000 with less than 4,000 relay participants. Last year, the event raised  $1.6 million through 17,646 athletes in 200 communities.

So where to the funds raised go to? All the funds goes directly to the Special Olympic Ontario and they will be used by Special Olympians for travel, programs and coaching costs.
